Cloudflare Workers vs Vercel vs Railway โ Where to Deploy Your Solo Project
Honest comparison of Cloudflare Workers, Vercel, and Railway for solo builders. Serverless vs containers, pricing, DX, and where to actually deploy your project.

Cloudflare vs Vercel vs Railway: The Quick Answer
Cloudflare Workers is the cheapest and fastest edge compute โ best for APIs and lightweight apps. Vercel is the best frontend/fullstack platform โ best for Next.js and web apps. Railway is the simplest way to deploy anything with a Dockerfile โ best for backends, databases, and non-web projects. Different tools, different strengths.
What Each Platform Actually Is
| Cloudflare Workers | Vercel | Railway | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model | Edge functions (V8 isolates) | Serverless + CDN | Containers (Docker) |
| Best for | APIs, edge logic, lightweight apps | Web apps, SSR, static sites | Backends, databases, anything |
| Runs | Globally at edge (300+ locations) | Serverless (regional) | Containers (US/EU) |
| Think of it as | “Smart CDN that runs code” | “Deploy your frontend” | “Heroku but modern” |
Pricing
Winner: Cloudflare Workers
| Cloudflare Workers | Vercel | Railway | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free tier | 100K requests/day | 100GB bandwidth | $5 free credit/mo |
| Paid | $5/mo (10M requests) | $20/mo | Pay per usage (~$5-20/mo typical) |
| Bandwidth | Unlimited (!) | 1TB on Pro | Included in compute |
| Database | D1 (SQLite), KV, R2 | None (bring your own) | Built-in Postgres, Redis |
Cloudflare’s pricing is absurd. $5/mo for 10 million requests and unlimited bandwidth. For API-heavy projects, nothing comes close.
Vercel’s pricing is fine for frontend apps but bandwidth overages get expensive.
Railway charges for compute time, which is fair but adds up for always-on services. The $5/mo free credit covers small projects.
What You Can Run
Winner: Railway (most flexible)
Cloudflare Workers: JavaScript/TypeScript/WASM only. No Node.js APIs (it’s V8 isolates, not Node). No long-running processes. No WebSockets on free tier. Many npm packages won’t work. It’s powerful but constrained.
Vercel: Frontend frameworks + serverless API routes. Great for web apps but not for arbitrary backend services. Function execution time limits apply (10s free, 60s pro).
Railway: Anything that runs in Docker. Node, Python, Go, Rust, whatever. Long-running processes, background workers, cron jobs, databases โ all fine. No artificial constraints.
For solo builders: if your project is “just a web app,” Vercel or Cloudflare. If it’s anything more complex โ background jobs, persistent connections, non-JS backends โ Railway.
Developer Experience
Winner: Vercel (frontend), Railway (backend)
Vercel: git push โ live. Preview deploys, instant rollbacks, clean dashboard. The gold standard for frontend DX.
Railway: Connect a GitHub repo or run railway up. Provisions databases in clicks. The dashboard shows logs, metrics, and environment variables clearly. It’s Heroku’s DX with modern infrastructure.
Cloudflare Workers: wrangler deploy. It works, but the DX has more sharp edges. Debugging Workers locally is better than it used to be (with wrangler dev), but the V8 isolate constraints mean you’ll hit “this doesn’t work in Workers” moments regularly.
Databases
Winner: Railway
Railway gives you managed Postgres, MySQL, Redis, and MongoDB in one click. Same platform as your app. Simple.
Cloudflare has D1 (SQLite at edge), KV (key-value), and R2 (S3-compatible storage). D1 is interesting but limited โ no joins on production-scale data, and it’s still maturing.
Vercel has no database. You bring your own โ Supabase, PlanetScale, Neon, whatever. More flexibility but more setup.
Scaling
Winner: Cloudflare Workers
Workers run at 300+ edge locations automatically. Zero cold starts (V8 isolates boot in milliseconds). Your API responds in <50ms worldwide without any configuration.
Vercel scales well for frontend workloads with its CDN + serverless model.
Railway scales vertically (bigger container) and horizontally (more replicas). It works but requires manual thought for high-traffic scenarios.
When to Use Each
Cloudflare Workers shines for:
- REST APIs and webhooks
- Auth middleware and edge logic
- Lightweight apps (landing pages, redirects)
- Anything that needs to be fast and cheap globally
Vercel shines for:
- Next.js applications (the obvious home)
- Any frontend framework with SSR
- Marketing sites and web apps
- Projects where frontend DX matters most
Railway shines for:
- Backend services (Node, Python, Go)
- Projects that need databases included
- Background workers and cron jobs
- Full-stack apps where you want everything in one place
The Freedom Score Angle
| Factor | Cloudflare Workers | Vercel | Railway |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor lock-in | Medium (Workers API) | Medium-High (Next.js) | Low |
| Solo builder fit | Good | Excellent | Excellent |
| Cost efficiency | Best | Good | Good |
| Portability | Medium (rewrite for Node) | Medium | High (Docker) |
| Open source | No | No | No |
| Freedom Score | 6/10 | 5/10 | 7/10 |
Railway wins on freedom because Docker containers are portable. Your Railway app runs anywhere Docker runs. Workers code needs rewriting for other platforms. Vercel’s Next.js coupling reduces portability.
So Which One?
Pick Cloudflare Workers if:
- You’re building APIs or edge logic
- Cost efficiency is paramount
- You want global performance without thinking about regions
- You’re comfortable with V8 isolate constraints
Pick Vercel if:
- You’re deploying a Next.js app (just do it)
- Frontend DX is your priority
- You want the best preview deploy experience
- Your app is primarily a web frontend with API routes
Pick Railway if:
- You need a backend with databases
- Your project has background jobs or long-running processes
- You want the simplest path from code to production
- Portability matters (Docker = run anywhere)
The honest take: Most solo builders need two of these. Vercel or Cloudflare Pages for the frontend + Railway for the backend and database. Or go all-in on Railway if you want one platform for everything. Cloudflare Workers for pure API projects where cost matters.
