Vercel vs Netlify: The Quick Answer

Vercel is the best place to deploy Next.js and the fastest platform overall. Netlify is simpler, more flexible with frameworks, and has a more generous free tier. Both are excellent. Your framework choice probably decides this for you.

Framework Support

Winner: Depends

Vercel owns Next.js. The integration is flawless — every Next.js feature works perfectly because the same team builds both. If you use Next.js, Vercel is the obvious choice.

Netlify is framework-agnostic and does it well. Astro, Hugo, SvelteKit, Remix — all deploy cleanly. Netlify’s adapter system means you’re not locked into one framework’s ecosystem.

For solo builders: if you’re on Next.js, Vercel. Anything else, Netlify is probably smoother.

Performance

Winner: Vercel (slightly)

Vercel’s Edge Network is fast. ISR (Incremental Static Regeneration) and Edge Functions are production-grade. Pages load fast, globally.

Netlify is also fast — for static sites, the difference is negligible. The gap shows up with server-side rendering and dynamic routes, where Vercel’s infrastructure is more optimized.

For a static blog or landing page, you won’t notice the difference.

Developer Experience

Winner: Vercel

git push and it’s live. Preview deployments for every PR. The dashboard is clean, the CLI is fast, the logs are readable. Vercel nails DX.

Netlify’s DX is also good but slightly more cluttered. The dashboard has accumulated features over the years and it shows. Deploy previews work great though, and the CLI is solid.

Netlify’s free tier has similar bandwidth but fewer build minutes. On paid tiers, they’re close. The real cost risk is bandwidth overages — both get expensive if you go viral.

For solo builders on free tier: both work. You won’t hit limits unless your project takes off, and by then you can afford $20/mo.

Serverless Functions

Winner: Vercel

Vercel’s serverless functions are faster, support more runtimes, and the Edge Functions run in ~50ms worldwide. The DX is also cleaner — just put a file in /api and it works.

Netlify Functions work fine but feel like an add-on rather than a core feature. They’ve improved a lot, but Vercel’s function infrastructure is ahead.

Forms & Identity

Winner: Netlify

Netlify has built-in form handling and identity (auth) that just work. Add an attribute to your HTML form and submissions go to your dashboard. Simple.

Vercel has none of this. You’ll need a third-party service for forms and auth. Not a big deal if you’re using a full framework with its own solutions, but Netlify’s built-ins are genuinely useful for simple sites.

Lock-in Risk

Vercel’s deep Next.js integration is a double-edged sword. Some Next.js features (middleware, ISR edge caching) work best — or only — on Vercel. Building on Next.js increasingly means building on Vercel.

Netlify is more portable. Your Astro or Hugo site deploys anywhere. You’re hosting on Netlify, not building for Netlify.
